Church Records

The library in nearby Church House holds local history information, including births, deaths and marriages from 1865 to 1900 and paper copies of the census returns for Adderbury & Milton (1851 - 1901 inclusive).
The Oxfordshire History Centre holds:

  • Marriages 1598-1897, 1898+
  • Banns 1754-1961
  • Burials 1598-1898+
  • Bishops Transcripts 1670, 1680, 1682, 1721-7, 1729-32, 1734-43, 1745-94, 1796-1822, 1826-50, 1854-6 (damaged)

Gravestones

The Adderbury History Association has surveyed all the gravestones in the churchyard. The survey is available in the village library in nearby Church House.

Manorial Court Rolls

The Elton Papers are the Court Rolls from 1587 for the Manor of Adderbury which are deposited at Oxford Study Centre. They came into the possession of Lord Elton when he became Lord of the Manor in 1954. The Adderbury History Association was granted access to make copies of the documents. The Adderbury History Association holds copies of most but not all of the Elton papers.

  • A new guide to the church has been produced which includes a brief history as well describing what you can see around the church during your visit. The guides are available in the church.
  • An English Parish Church its story. The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Adderbury. Written by Nicholas Allen. Published by Wykeham Press 2011. An illustrated 138 page book about the history of St Mary’s church Adderbury. 
  • Adderbury a Thousand Years of History. Written by Nicholas Allen. Published by Phillimore 1995.
  • The History Association is able to offer A4 booklets of the 1841-1901 (except 1851) census records for Adderbury and Milton for a small charge, as well as a CD of the transcribed births, deaths and marriage records for Adderbury.
